An Introduction into the world of Tai Chi ‘Without energy, you have no quality of life’ - a quote from a stranger I met on a train!
What thoughts or images does Tai chi conjure up in your mind?
Maybe something like mine was, of ‘the thing that old people do’ or perhaps you imagine rows upon rows of Chinese people in a park in Beijing all moving in unison. Look at a few web sites and the images and ethos seems to be different again - one of fighting and rivalry or competition.
So, what really is Tai Chi?
When you look at the following pages and web links, you’ll see it’s all of the above plus a whole lot more. Delve into its history you’ll find courage, diligence, respect, loyalty. Research it and you’ll find medical facts and findings that will amaze and probably even confound you. Especially if you consider that Tai Chi is just a set of slow moving exercises - isn’t it? Read about, watch or listen to some of the people who are passionately involved and they’ll tell you it’s a ‘deadly’ martial art and possibly even demonstrate some evasive moves.
Very few will talk in terms of its direct ability to manipulate energy - that Sacred essence that surrounds us and is within us.
To me, this is really what Tai Chi is all about - Energy - and indeed what all the web sites you’ll visit will be ‘saying’. They’re just saying it in different ways, depending on where they are coming from and going to, whether that be health or protection or happiness.
The information contained in the following pages is designed so you can explore all of the aspects and benefits of Tai Chi. The Beginners Guide will give you a basic insight into Tai Chi and the Resource Directory which will take you on a journey into the incredibly diverse world of Tai Chi through the eyes and words of the experts in their field.
In terms of addressing the Sacred essence, it’s been extremely difficult to find web sites on Tai Chi that convey what you will find over time with your Tai Chi practice. I think the saying ‘The Tao which can be expressed using words is not the true Tao’ (Tao Te Ching) is possibly applicable to Tai Chi web sites as well! There are a lot of web sites that talk about the martial art or health aspects, but do little to put across the conscious reconnection you make with the sacred and energetic essence when you get involved in this beautiful practice. I would guess this is because its pretty well near impossible to put ‘it’ into words and represents a different meaning to each person. I have chosen web sites which I consider have some of that ‘special something’, but to find it you’re going to have to do a lot of reading between the lines - it’s more of a feeling that you know, that someone ‘knows’!
Ultimately, if you want to know whether Tai Chi is right for you (and if it will allow you to touch and experience the Sacred), you’re going to have to go out and experience it for yourself! After all, you’ll only truly believe what you read when you have experienced it for yourself!
I hope these pages will encourage you to take that step!
